Oscar hits and misses

March 8, 2010

Many in the fashion industry refer to the Oscars as the “World Series” of red carpets. Every eye is fixed on Hollywood’s biggest stars as they sashay into the Kodak Theater. Having dressed clients for several awards shows, I know first-hand the painstaking detail that goes into the dress, jewelry, shoe and bag selection. You’re not simply just dressing someone for a night, you’re creating the look that will be splashed across every gossip and fashion magazine and website. So without any further ado, here’s the homeruns, grandslams and, of course, the strike-outs….
Dainty decolletage:
Bare necks were everywhere this year! Gone were the statement necklaces we saw take over the fall and winter runways. Everyone from Jennifer Lopez in Armani to Cameron Diaz in Oscar de la Renta to Carrie Mulligan in Prada rocked a strapless dress with bare necks.

Singing the Blues:
The hottest hue of the season is blue. Cobalt, pastel, indigo… as long as it’s blue in tone, it’s in! Maggie Gyllenhaal in Dries Von Noten, and Rachel McAdams in Elie Saab looked lovely in graphic prints while the usually flash Mariah Carey finally toned it down in navy Valentino.

Feminine Frills:
Rouching, tiers and layers reined supreme on starletes this year. Zoe Saldana’s cascading Givenchy skirt was perfection, I wanted to get lost in Demi Moore’s honey colored Versace and Vera Farmiga was a vision in Marchesa.

Best and worst dressed:
Every year, one or two ladies top everyone’s lists and a few fall straight to the bottom. My picks for best dressed this year were Sarah Jessica Parker in Chanel and the afore mentioned Demi Moore. Worst dressed has to go to Charlize Theron in Dior and Diane Kruger in Chanel- yikes!

Not sure if you can pull off the color pink? You c Not sure if you can pull off the color pink? You can! The key is not going overboard and pairing it with neutral colors like white and camel. Still hesitant? Start with pink lipstick (I swear nothing wakes up a tired face more than a little swipe of lipstick) or in your accessories like a hat or handbag and then work your way into clothing! We’ve been spending a lot time at our home in La We’ve been spending a lot time at our home in Lake Havasu lately for a change of scenery- I guess that’s one of the silver linings of virtual school. Whenever we are there, I challenge myself to a play game I like to call “Find cute clothes at @walmart ”- Perfect for #FrugalFridays!
I have to say if you are willing to search, you can actually find some cute pieces like this tie-dye T-shirt I scored for $9.98! I’ve always been a big proponent of mixing high and low so I’ll pair a T-shirt like this with some of my good jeans and bold accessories to balance to look. My favorite budget tie-dye pieces linked in bio.
Being a stylist I spend a ton of time in malls and Being a stylist I spend a ton of time in malls and stores and picked up this little nugget of wisdom along the way... @freepeople is one of my go to’s and as luck would have it, @macys online and some brick and mortars sell Free People and it is almost always on sale. I bought the henley in this picture for $21 at Macy’s while it was selling for $68 at Free People. Sidebar here for a moment, I love a good henley as an alternative to a plain old T-shirt! So my big take away is if you find something you love at Free People (and who wouldn’t) check out Macy’s before you buy! Check out my stories for some of my top pics for pieces currently on sale! @liketoknow.it #liketkit http://liketk.it/35R0Y
If you know me, you know that I love both puppies If you know me, you know that I love both puppies and hats 👒🐶 and while we could all use more puppies these days, today- let’s talk about hats. It is the easiest way to turn an outfit from drab to fab in addition to hiding roots, grease and grays or as I like to call it Covid hair.
I can’t tell you the amount of times I have had friends or clients say, oh I could never pull off a hat like you do. WRONG! Hats are definitely all about attitude so when you put one on you have to own it. If you think you can rock it, trust me you can. And if this past year has taught me anything, at the end of the day, do you really care what anyone thinks about you?!
